Tedd Arnold

Born in Elmira, New York, Tedd grew up in a family of six with three brothers. His family lived on a farm in Pennsylvania for several years then returned to Elmira until Tedd was ten years old. His father's work then required that they move to Gainesville, Florida. There, Tedd's first art lessons in an abandoned dentist's office over the Happy Hour pool hall eventually led to a fine arts degree from the University of Florida. He and his wife, Carol, started their family in Tallahassee where Tedd worked as a commercial illustrator. Carol, a Kindergarten teacher, drew Tedd's attention to children's books. Their first son, Walter, inspired his breakthrough picture book, NO JUMPING ON THE BED!. He and his family live, once again, in Elmira. His second son, William, now stars in NO MORE WATER IN THE TUB!, a sequel to his first book. He has now published over 50 books as author and illustrator.

1. For my one of my ceters I created a word search for my students using idoms that were used in Even More Parts By: Tedd Arnold.  My third graders had a great time with it.  Here is the site is used to create the word search.

WORD SEARCH SITE CLICK HERE

2. For another center I provided information about Tedd Arnold to my students.  I asked them to study the information for 15 minutes.  They had some trouble focusing with the other centers going on, yet they still ended up impressing me at the end of our centers.

3. I again let my students play with idoms.  I created a center in which my students could create their own idoms as well as some of the idoms that were mentioned in the text.  I used 4x6 index cards.  Each card had a single word written on it.  The instructions that I left with my students was to create as many idoms as possible in 15 minutes.  I was amazed at the team work that this center created.

4. This center is one in which my students will have to re-visit to complete their work.  I gave my students several books to look at and I asked them to create a bookcover for a book.  They were thrilled!  I gave them an example of a bookcover that I created to inspire them.

HERE IS MY EXAMPLE

5. Another center I used was a comprehension center.  I place tons of Tedd Arnold books on the table.  The only instructions that I left my students with is they were to read any of Tedd Arnold's books and answer the comprehension questions.

Here are my comprehension questions:
  1. What was the title?
  2. Who was the author?
  3. Where was the setting?
  4. What was the conflict?
  5. What was the solution?
  6. Who were the characters?

Using these questions the students could pick any selection and these questions would still apply.

6. This center was focused on library terms.  I find several of my students do not know how to use a library, so I thought a review of the terms would help them.  My students did stuggle with this activity.  I had to go over and scaffold the students in this center several times within the 15 minute period.  These are the questions I asked my students:

  1. What is the plastic cover on a book called?
  2. What is the sticker on the edge of a book called?
  3. What are the letters and or numbers on the edge of a book used for?
  4. What is the page called in a book, in which the author dedicates the book?
  5. What is the label called that we use to check-out a book?
  6. Who is the author?
  7. Who is the Illustrator?
  8. Who was the publisher?
